I wrote this to fulfill my part on helping my colleagues in IGCN on Leaders Forum in Jakarta, Indonesia 🙂 Kudos to them!
Indonesia Global Compact Network or IGCN is striving to socialize and encourage other business leaders in doing a different approach on how they conduct their business. This different approach is tangible only by aligning the UN Global Compact Ten Principles and the Sustainable Development goals with the existing company and/or organization goals to make sure that all stakeholders are going in the same direction.In accordance with this enlightening goal towards creating a better place for humanity, IGCN arranged a 3-day event titled IGCN Forum 2017. Bringing the theme of “Making Global Goals Local Business”, the forum was located in Plaza Simas, Plaza Simas, Jl. Fachrudin No. 18, Kampung Bali, Jakarta Pusat, Indonesia. It was conducted from 17-19 October 2017, from 09.00 AM to 13.00 PM and to 17.00 PM in the last day.
Due to the increasingly urgent matter of SDG in the present world, IGCN is making IGCN Forum 2017 as the medium, the place for everyone, from students to lecturers, business leaders to government officials, to gather and deliberate with each other in finding the ideal solution on putting the issues to an end.
In the IGCN Forum 2017, invitees and guests listened to many prominent panelists with extensive background, sharing their insights and experience in their respective industries under 3 (three) different forums: Leaders Forum, Woman Business Forum, and Business Sustainability Forum. These forums complemented each other to amplify the message and calling all leaders and the society to act – giving results with continuous development based on constant monitor towards the quality of their output from the conducted efforts.
Regardless of their expertise in their industry, all leaders were seated in the first day of the forum, the Leaders Forum. Held on Tuesday, 17 October 2017, the forum was consisted of 2 (two) panel discussions, which are titled “The World We Want” and “SDGs Means Business”. These panel discussions validate the importance of everyone that might be involved, especially leaders, in creating innovative ways through cooperative work. Only through the collective vision and actions of all people involved, the key to diminish the hurdles in achieving the SDGs by 2030 might be feasible.
In the Leaders Forum, people had the opportunity to hear new insights from renowned speakers which have worked their way in the pursue to achieve the SDGs. Opened by Mr. Justin, Chief Editorial Advisor for Forbes, the audience was asked to be focus in the goals by projecting themselves in the better future, better world to live in, through speeches given by Mrs. Meng Liu, Head of Asia-Oceania Networks of UN Global Compact, Mrs. Anita Nirody, UN Resident Coordinator & UNDP Resident Representative, and Dr. Ir. Arifin Rudiyanto, Deputy Minister for Maritime Affairs and Natural Resources, Indonesian Ministry of National Development Planning Board (BAPPENAS).
Afterwards, there is the Woman Business Forum which was held on Wednesday, 18 October 2017. People was asked to jump in and understand why woman empowerment and gender equality is important to be defended. Employees and business owners must be open and promotes women inclusivity to workplaces and working environment whilst diminishing the potential gender gap and gender discrimination that may arise. It was consisted of 1 (one) session titled “Ringing the Bell for Gender Equality” and 2 (two) discussions, titled “Step It Up for Gender Equality” and “Equality Means Business”.
Opened by Hendra Warsita, VP SMEs & Women Empowerment (WEP), IGCN & Chief Corporate Officer for Markplus, Inc, the forum was later on addressed by Dr. (HC) Martha Tilaar, Founder of IGCN and Founder of Martha Tilaar Group and also completed by a remarkable keynote speech by Drs. Enggartiasto Lukita, the Minister of Trade of Indonesia. Afterwards, people got to fulfill their wish to know more about gender equality and its implementation in business through noted key speakers.
Serving as the sweet closing for the sequence of IGCN Forum 2017 is the Business Sustainability Forum which was divided into 2 (two) parts, from 9 AM to 12.30 PM and from 1.15 PM to 5 PM. Held on Thursday, 19 October 2017, people used this last chance to participate into the learning platform by IGCN. Participants were able to learn on how to implement the UN Guiding Principles of Business and Human Rights (UNGPs) to their businesses, organizations, and governing bodies.
In the first part of the discussions, the forum was opened by Debora Tjandrakusuma, VP Human Rights of IGCN & Legal and Corporate Affairs Director of Nestlé Indonesia. The event was continued by a special address from Saiti Gusrini, Project Officer, European Union – European Instrument for Democracy and Human Rights (EU-EIDHR). People also had the opportunity to be updated on UNGP on business and human rights by Rafendi Djamin, Senior Advisor for Human Rights, HRWG Indonesia. The speeches and addresses given were complemented by a remarkable speech from Dr. Mualimin Abdi, SH., MH, the Director General for Human Rights, Ministry of Law and Human Rights. Later on, the panelists discussed on how human rights apply in a business context and was followed by Multi-Stakeholders Dialogue series on UN Guiding Principles on Business & Human Rights.
Afterwards, the audience listened to a very welcoming note by Dewi P. Bramono, VP Environment of IGCN and Deputy Director, Sustainability and Stakeholder Engagement for Asia Pulp & Paer (APP). It was followed by an address from Prof. Shahbaz Khan, Ph. D, Director of UNESCO Regional Science Bureau for Asia and the Pacific and UNESCO Representative for Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Timor-Leste and by a very important speech from Dr. Ir. Siti Nurbaya Bakar, M.Sc, the Minister of Environment and Forestry of Indonesia.
In this part of the event, the panelists discussed on water sustainability and waste management. Nearing the end of the event, the forum was topped by the launch of Global to Local Pilot Project: “Ubud Bebas Sampah 2020” and the agreement signing of “Project Pulau Pari Phase 2”.
On the end of the event, IGCN represented by Y. W. Junardy, the President of IGCN put the event into a very sweet ending by sharing that it is time to appreciate leaders who set themselves as the great example in paving the way towards reaching the SDGs and also the importance of having new members to make the organization into larger and greater organization which may make Indonesia into one of the leaders in pursuing ways to complete the goals of conducting business sustainably.
